If you are serious about your identity on internet you shouldn't allow your domain to expire. If it does expire the domain registrar will put their own advertisement on the parked page and your website and email system will stop working,

You will have 30-45 days depending on the domain TLD (.com / .in / .info / .biz) to renew it at par (thats the price it was bought)

But after that the domain will be in redemption period for further 45 days where you would need to pay Rs.3500 to the registrar.

If you still don't renew it it will go in pending deletion for 7 days where the domain name details will be available for domain squatters to review and place order and buy it.

If the domain name is good they will buy it within seconds of deletion and they will inturn offer to sell it to you at Rs. 35000 as a starting price.

Its a dirty but a legitimate business so seriously think before you let the domain expire.
